Now I'm enthused about being home again.

Being away gives us a new view of our lives. Coming home puts our lives back into perspective, and gives us new energy to take on the tasks ahead of us.

I always tell people that there is no lack of things to do in this world. A vacation can give us new energy and enthusiasm to work on these tasks and projects.

Thanks for coming along on our trip!
It was foggy, so we went to the nearest campground at the Lewis Mountain campground. We found too much fog on the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park to make us want to stay there more than one night (Sunday night), so we went back down off the mountain and had a late lunch at a Cracker Barrel Restaurant. Monday night we stayed at a private campground in Front Royal, VA. We are hoping to see the trillium and maybe Yellow Ladyslippers Tuesday at Thompson Wildlife Management Area, about 13 miles from the campground. We were there last year and want to check it out on our way home. I am still trying to fill in the blog for April 28 through May 6, so check back.

We are on the NC side of the Smoky Mountains in Cherokee, NC. Will be
in the Smokemont Campground for 2 more nights and then off to
Asheville, NC and the Botanical Gardens and the Aboretum.

We
are able to do this quick post compliments of the local Arby's
Restaurant. We will be posting in the next couple of days about our 1
week (or so) stay in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. More
photos will come with that.

Be sure to check back to see what we saw and did in the mountains!

Update for this post:

Because it was rainy and not hiking weather, we went into the town of Cherokee to shop for food and souvenirs. The town of Cherokee has painted bear statues throughout the downtown area, each with a different theme and decoration. Letty picked the one in the photo as her favorite and asked me to take a photo of it. In a whimsical mood, I took took a photo of me kissing it. I love it! (The photo!)

On the way back to the campground we stopped at the National Park visitor center to check the hours, and found the Elk grazing near the parking lot. The park has been re-introducing the Elk to the park for a few years now.
I wanted to hike the Bud Ogle Trail because many years ago I saw and photographed a Yellow Ladyslipper along this short, 3/4 mile loop trail. I even mark the location of the flower with a GPS unit. Unfortunately, I was using a different co-ordinate system then, and couldn't convert it to the system I had with me this time. I looked for the rock I remember the flower being near, but didn't even see an area that looked similar.
I hiked the Schoolhouse Gap Trail and the White Oak Sink Trail a number of years ago looking for Yellow Ladyslippers, which were at one time reported to be abundant on the Sink Trail. This year I heard rumors that the Yellows were no longer there, and that the season was early, and any Yellows would have already finished blooming anyway.

When I didn't find any near where I knew there were Pink Ladyslippers, I was determined to go all the way to the 'Sink' and see if any were there.

I walked up a steep trail along the mountain's edge and came to a high spot where I could see that the trail went down a couple hundred feet and kept going down.. Knowing that it would be a long hike up and then down again on the way back, I decided that I didn't really need to go any further. On the way back, I found where some Yellows were growing, but not in bloom. There were other wildflowers to see and photograph, though, so I thoroughly enjoyed the hike.

US highway 129 along the southwest edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is known as "The Tail of the Dragon", noted for its 318 curves in 11 miles. We needed to go to the Tennessee side of the Smoky Mountains from the Nantahala and Joyce Kilmer Memorial National Forests, so over the mountains we went. Not bad if you have been driving in the mountains for a while, but edgy just the same.

Many times we do want a cooked breakfast quickly and use our microwave. Here is today's breakfast: omelet, turkey bacon, sliced peppers, whole wheat mini bagel with Olivio (butter substitute).
Campbell Folk SchoolLetty had read about this school that teaches woodworking and traditional crafts, and always wanted to visit it. The school is located in rolling hills and made up of several separate buildings, residences for students, a campground for students, a dining room for students and a gift shop.

I visited the woodworking shop and basket and broom shop. A basket making class was in session, but I was able to talk to the instructor and learn a little about how the tradiitonal baskets were made from black ash split logs.

I also visited the woodturning shop and talked to a woodturner from Kansas who was taking the class there.
I did not want to put more than one photo up.

Last night and this morning it rained, so hikes were out. Instead we came into town to do laundry and some shopping. This evening we stopped at Arby's and the connection was faster. A put up a couple more photos from the Wasilik Poplar trail. (Check the previous post for a couple days to see more photos from that trail) and then tomorrow we will be in a private campground with internet and will be posting a lot more.Tom and Letty Chadwickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01244425152612771014noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-707641040175219489.post-71861005656630606482012-04-17T23:00:00.000-04:002012-04-20T09:55:13.047-04:00April 17, 2012- Cheap Gasoline?

Letty had to hold on tight.

The parking area for the trailhead was an area large enough to turn around and park off the road. Several trucks went up the road while I was on the trail including a rollback truck that was parked along the road further down the hill. The rollback came back down the hill with a forest service bulldozer on it and went down to the main road.

Letty was able to see a couple of Trillium from the RV as she waited. I was trying to follow the trail for the full 1 mile round trip, but after a while I decided to come back the way I came because it was unclear where the trail was going and I wasn't sure how long it would take to complete it. A loop trail therefore turned into an 'out and back' trail.

There were many wildflowers on the trail and many chances to stop and take photos. As I was hiking back down the trail, I noticed something moving near the ground in the plants. A black butterfly was climbing up stems and flapping his wings. He appeared to be drying them as if he had just crawled out of his chrysalis. I stopped to take photos of him, and he continued to crawl and wave his wings. I stood still and he climbed up my shoe and then my pant leg. I thought he might 'ride' down the trail with me, but suddenly he launched himself into the air and flew off the hill out into the treetops. I believe it was his first flight, and apparently I helped! Should I call him Wilbur, or Orville?
The Appalachian Trail passes within 5 feet of the parking area and we saw hikers that were attempting the whole trail, which runs from Georgia to Maine. Since I don't think I'm ever going to hike the whole thing, I decided to take my own picture when I get a chance to be on the trail for a short while, or just crossing the trail. Here, along with photos from the trail is my latest AT (standard Abbr. for Appalachian Trail) photo.
This falls is considered by some to be the highest waterfall in the Eastern US. [Highest, not tallest.] A very large and spectacular falls. We saw Sessile Trillium along the way.

My question is what do they mean by 'the Eastern US'? How far west does that go!
When Misty first saw Chipper, she immediately fell in love with him and they have been inseparable ever since.
We had stayed once before on a Friday night in the spring and woke up Saturday morning to hundreds of fisherman (and women) along the road leaving the campground. The creek that went along the roadside had been recently stocked with trout and it was the first day of the season. This year we were too late to catch that. There were a number of wildflowers right in the campground. (see the photos).
We have internet here so hope to bring the travelog up to date with text and photos. If you want to email us now is a good time- we will be able to get email for the next 2 days and then we will be looking for MacDonalds or other places along the way because we will be mostly staying in National Park or National Forest Campgrounds. See ya tomorrow!Tom and Letty Chadwickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01244425152612771014noreply@blogger.com0
